Sharing The Art Spirit Since 1971
Who We Are
The Chicken Farm Art Center is a community of artists and makers settled into a mixed-use development that was once a mom and pop chicken farm. We are THE destination in San Angelo to find eclectic art and artists in a peaceful oasis that allows your soul to breathe. Whether you're coming in to spend the day for one of our events, shop for a one-of-a-kind gift, take a class with one of our resident artists or lodge at Inn at the Art Center, you'll find a unique atmosphere and inspiration hidden in every little nook and cranny.
We opened our doors in 1971 when the late Roger Allen quit his job as the Central High School art teacher and partnered with a couple buddies to make an artist dream a reality! Roger Allen, Bill Rich, and Richard Ramirez bought a vacant set of buildings - formerly a 1940's chicken farm - and slowly converted it into studios and apartments where artists could live in community and build off the "Art Spirit". It essentially created an artist incubator program as many up and coming artists have 'flown the coop' to become well known artists such as Rene Alvarado, Mejo Okon and more. In November of 1999 Jerry & Susan Warnell purchased the back half of The Chicken Farm Art Center and started making their mark on the property as well. They converted the grain silo building into the Silo House Restaurant and a building of coops into bed and breakfast rooms. The restaurant, with new chefs, is still open for a prefixe 5-course meal Thursday - Saturday evenings and Saturday's for brunch.
Encouraging and Inspiring Artists and Art Lovers
At The Chicken Farm Art Center, our mission is to create a safe, communal space for all kinds of artists, art lovers, and anyone who is just curious about what we do; to come together and express our creative sides and to learn a little more about each other. We believe in unlocking the creative within each and every one of us, and offer a wide range of free public events, open air concerts (during the warmer months), and some of our studios even offer a variety of classes for various ages and skill sets. Whether you’re interested in learning "how it's made", wanting to purchase something to decorate your home or office space, or wanting to learn a new hobby or skill, The Chicken Farm Art Center is here to welcome you into the fold.
Our Artistic Values
A Home for Artists
We believe every artist needs space in which to create, and that space should inspire and support their creative process. We also understand how important it is for the place to have just the right environment, and that is what we strive to provide at The Chicken Farm Art Center. If you’re looking for a place that nurtures your artistic journey, as a maker or patron, look no further: we’re here and we can’t wait to meet you!
