About the Artist …

Texas born and educated, Roger earned his degree in Art Education at Texas Tech in 1966. He began his career as a high fire stoneware potter and art teacher in the 60's and 70's. He taught art in the San Angelo public schools while establishing the Art Center. Since 1977, the Art Center and his own work have received his full attention. Roger's focus changed to bronze casting and sculpture during the 80's but returned to clay in the 90's, and the StarKeeper story was born.      Roger is knowledgeable in many areas of art techniques and spends much time sharing with others. He remains committed to education by offering a diverse program of special interests for the children - creators of the future - and an array of programs for all ages. But, the Old Chicken Farm Art Center may well be Roger Allen's biggest and finest work of art.
MEANTIME...I'M PROUD…
I'm very proud of the art center, what we represent in San Angelo and what we do for the city, and I'm grateful of the support from the city, schools, and fine arts museum. I'm proud of the art center artists; so be sure to look at their pages and /or sites. I'm proud of Pam and her newfound career teaching Somatics. I'm proud of Jerry and Susan and their success with the Silo House restaurant. B/B, and Gecko Gallery. And I'm very proud of a great staff that keeps the day in day out stuff going.

Sharing the Stars
Having worked with clay since 1960, I have passed through many stages of pottery making. Stoneware was my thing for many years, then I discovered COLOR and I'm having a good time. We create most of our colors and use an airbrush to apply the blended colors. I have several series that we work with and the pictures below show a small amount of the work. For a complete pottery site go to

First came the StarKeeper. An original story I wrote grew into a series that illustrates The Full Full Day of The StarKeeper. 12 plates illustrate the story   and many others are created for commissions. It's a short and simple story that says we are all StarKeepers.
You can read it and see all on the clay site
.

Animal Spirits
Animal Spirits
series use deer, bear, buffalo, and eagle   as the primary animals but almost every animal has   been a subject. Created on large platters and a unique   design each time, we try to convey a connection to the
   animal world.

After nearly 50 years of pottery making we finally got that big commission...maybe not again. This 42x42" baptismal font was installed in Holy Angels Church in San Angelo Texas in 2004. We did the font and custom tiles for the pool. It works great and looks good.
