As a somatic therapist and educator, I bring together a variety of formal education, specific bodywork training, and life experiences in the area of healing arts. I am a licensed massage therapist in both Texas and Oregon, with over 1400 hours in my field, and have been practicing as a full-time professional since 1987.
I am an assistant instructor at the Novato Institute in California and a former vice president of the International Association of Hanna Somatic Educators.
In 1995 I joined a small number of certified practitioners trained in an emerging and immensely exciting neuromuscular re-education work called Hanna Somatic Education; to date there are fewer than 100 certified Hanna Educators worldwide. The three-year training occurs only in California at this time, but has, never the less, attracted practitioners from Canada, Mexico, England, Germany, Switzerland, South Africa, and the rest of the United States as well.
As a massage therapist, I incorporate eight or nine different bodywork disciplines into a session, including trager, myofascial release, orthobiony, cranial-sacral work, zero balancing, deep tissue, Swedish, and a few others.
The work is deep, therapeutic, relaxing and rehabilitating; and my clientele includes fast-paced professionals, post injury and post-operative clients, people with chronic illness and disabilities, children, pregnant women, and folks who just want to relax.
While a massage session would be considered a passive therapeutic session for clients, a Hanna Somatic session involves the client, wearing loose clothing, as an active participant in an "awareness through movement" process. This educational somatic activity is designed to assist the client in learning to recognize, release, and reverse unconscious neuromuscular habits that cause the chronically tight muscle patterns responsible for much of the pain, stiffness, soreness, and weakness people feel throughout their bodies.
